Nipsey Hussle Shuts Down Crenshaw for The Marathon Clothing Store Launch
Neighborhood Nip’ is at it again. 31-year-old rapper Nipsey Hussle of Crenshaw has always been a key contributor to his hometown, (he’s played in celebrity basketball games, opened his own Fatburger and even given away pounds of weed in the name of charity) but Saturday June 17 may have marked his biggest gift to the city yet. On 3420 W. Slauson Ave. he launched a flagship store for his clothing label, The Marathon.
The store’s launching was an extravaganza in its own—the whole block was shut down for what was basically a carnival on Slauson. Nipsey’s presence in the city is undeniable, but the turnout was impressive, even for a local star. Kids and adults of all ages mingled in the streets all day, celebrating the historic day for Nipsey and the city that’s seen him grow so much over the years.
In addition to the fan support, Nip had a lot of celebrity support as well. The store’s opening quickly became a star studded affair as many celebrities came through to support the independent rapper including Russell Westbrook, 21 Savage, Demarcus Cousins, Jim Jones and Nav. Nipsey’s longtime girlfriend and actress Lauren London was in attendance as well. Nipsey himself could be seen all over the event, smoking blunts and socializing with the people that he has worked so hard to be able to help. Nipsey continues to lead the way for artists looking to give back to their communities. He may not have the resources of Dr. Dre (who just gave 10 million to a Compton high school) but Nip continues to have a genuine presence in LA, both personally and economically. His efforts are commendable and deeply appreciated by the city that has helped him blossom into the artist and person he is today.
