Unfortunately we didn't have time for #YoThisSlaps last week, so this week we're back with a huge list of quality music from multiple genres in LA's underground. Find your new favorite song below:
J-Kwe$t & Adam ES - Mixed Souls (prod. Luweewee)
These two South Bay artists seem to bring the best out of each other every time they link up. Their abstract wordplay, LSD-driven subject matter and ability to fluidly step out of their comfort zones is what makes them such a dynamic team on ‘Mixed Souls.’ Listen below:
Nedarb Nagrom - Girls Just Want To Have Fun
What does Nedarb do when he’s drunk? Apparently he makes bangin’ instrumentals sampling songs that everyone loves. The original song is amazing, and Nedarb does it major justice here. The right artist could make an absolute classic on this one. Listen below:
Joel Pe$o - Not A Love Song feat. SLEEPS
Emo rap is poppin’ right now, especially in LA, and Joel Pe$o may be the most slept on artist making it. The fact that he self-produces most of his music is what sets him apart for us. ‘Not A Love Song’ takes you on a trip, with an infectious chorus and eerie vocals courtesy of Joel Pe$o and SLEEPS. Listen below:
NostalgiaV - Teenage Fever feat. Angel Alexander & Olympus Mars
You can spend all day looking for music on Soundcloud and still not find another song that sounds like this (seriously, we just did it). NostalgiaV has the presence and command of a rap veteran on the mic; Angel Alexander lays down some soul-touching R&B vocals, practically making it her own song; and Olympus Mars provides a soothing chorus to tie the whole thing together. This genre infused love song is an instant classic.
Bobby Bucher - Sue Me (prod. Guru Doug)
Somehow Bobby Bucher finds a way to flex, open up emotionally, and give life advice in the same song on ‘Sue Me.’ His vocals are layered masterfully allowing his complex, conceptual lyrics to resonate even more. . This is a song you can get lost in. Listen below:
IQ The IceMane - How High feat. Savvy Swiss (prod. IceMane)
You ever hear someone for the first time and it immediately sounds like rap was the right choice? That’s IQ The IceMane. His flow is non-stop, each bar seeming to feed off of the last, plus he self-produces. Savyy Swiss is a longtime collaborator of IQ The IceMane and is able to match his energy with charisma of his own. Listen below:
Niko Beats - Want To Do feat. Nick Nery
A month after producing the most recent project from BRISS DONT MISS, Niko Beats is collaborating again, this time with a singer—Nick Nery. The lyrics beat are simple but not empty, allowing the listener to really hear Nery’s raspy yet comforting voice. Listen below:
Trae Suave - Ballin’ (prod. CashMoneyAP)
With the overflow of rappers trying to make it in LA, it’s easy to overlook the R&B singers coming up, but we don’t. Trae Suave has a voice that already sounds famous, especially when his vocals are mixed this well. Even the simplest “aw yeah, yeah” sounds amazing coming from him. Listen below:
Mikey Hash - Suge (prod. Cole Train)
This LA-based artist has put out a ton of music over the last year, and it’s paid off. He’s developed a sense of identity, usually laying down one lone track of semi-mixed vocals w/ a little bit of echo. It’s got a very personal feel to it, leaving no doubt that the artist you’re hearing is the person he really is. His new song ‘Suge’ is packed with bars from start to finish. Listen below:
Jayhem - Family Cry
This song is intense with emotion, and we absolutely love it. Jayhem is out of North Long Beach and usually has a much more rugged sound to his music, but we’re happy he mixed it up with this one. ‘Family Cry’ is a passionate song with thought-provoking stories and narratives. One of the realest songs we’ve heard in awhile. Listen below:
Vee Major - Road To Success (video)
Vee Major promised new music in September, and on the 1st of the month she kept her promise, releasing a new video for her song ‘Road To Success.’ This MC is back with a vengeance, outlining what it’s going to take for her to get to the top. We think she might have what it takes. Watch below:
Nafé Bradley - LL
Progress can be heard in every song this rapper/producer drops. More importantly, he’s improving his own style and not catering to what’s poppin’ right now. Nafé Bradley speaks the truth without sounding like a dull, preachy rapper who's stuck in the 90's. This is an artist who has the potential to transcend and connect multiple generations of hip hop fans. Listen to the self-produced 'LL' below:
LJ Hunter - Therapy Sessions pt. 2
LJ Hunter recently dropped his debut project, Live Young. The whole tape is some of the 18-year-old’s best work, but this song really stuck out to us after listening. He’s giving us his raw thoughts, but presenting them in a way that keeps the listener hyped. If you rock w/ this one, give the whole album a chance. Listen below:
6 Villa - Miss Me Too (prod. Zayce Hundo)
This track is off of 6 Villa’s recent project ‘Numbers.’ The melodies and flow sound effortless, yet they’re what make ‘Miss Me Too’ such a good listen. Ironically, it’s a got a feel-good vibe while telling a story of a failed romance. Not easy to pull off, but 6 Villa makes it seem that way. Listen below:
