Not sure how we've missed a talent as massive as Ken Malik, but he makes his SLAP debut with his new album -- My Mental Diary 3. It's crazy to hear an artist this young digest everything he's been through and then be able to vocalize it in a way that resonates with hip hop fans of all generations. He gets a lot of Mozzy comparisons, but his style seems to be a bit more rooted in the old school. He's got a soulful tone to his music, harmonizing with himself in a way that brings to mind Boosie or even 2Pac. You look at the track list and you may figure that this is an album glorifying the streets and the fast pace of life that comes with growing up in them, but dig into the lyrics and you'll find it's quite the opposite. Tracks like 'Murder, Murder' and 'Gang Member' highlight the downsides and disadvantages of gang banging rather than making it seem appealing.

While he may not depict street life as a good option for young listeners, Ken Malik isn't regretful of who he is. If anything, he's proud and appreciative -- speaking on his life like it's both a curse and a blessing. It was hard and shaped him in a way that may not be ideal, but it also taught him lessons about life and people that you don't learn growing up in the suburbs. Ken Malik isn't your average rapper from Compton. He's got a lot to say and a ton of insight to offer about his surroundings. His realistic attitude to what he's been through would be commendable at any age, but to be looking at things this early is remarkable. The music is amazing and the message is shit that every kid needs to hear. There are no features, almost like Malik doesn't trust anybody to fully understand what he's trying to do with the music. Like another voice on the album would take away from the message he's trying to preach.

Production is flawless throughout, with beats that toggle between contemporary and old school, a lot like Ken Malik's style of rap. Producer credits go to Ice Starr, DrumDummie, Jay GP Bangz & Blasian Beats. "Tension Pt. 2" is one of the most chilling displays of self-reflection you'll ever hear. If you're an album skimmer, make sure you at least check that one out. Listen to My Mental Diary 3 below:
