We talked to Mann back in 2017, and he emphasized how important it was that his neighborhood of West LA establish a larger presence in LA hip hop and overall culture. After dropping his own tape highlighting the intersection of Fairfax and Pico, Mann is back with another West LA project titled South of Pico. The tape is a collaboration with two of the area's up and comers, HitTown & Yelo Hill. Staying true to the theme of LA, the tape has an early 90's feel; drawing from the G-Funk era for inspiration with high pitched synths and funky bass lines. The West LA trio of rappers recruits an army of LA producers for the tape with credits going to JHawk, ArjayOnTheBeat, Larry Jay, Jay PBangz, Rookie Year, Ace, NikeBoy, G5YVE & HitTown.
Each artist on South of Pico is distinctly different from the others. Mann is as cool as it gets on a mic, with a versatile mix of soft melodies and straight raps. YeloHill has a more straight up approach, giving you bars and commentary on his life in West LA, never wavering from his relentless flow. HitTown stands out with his high, auto tuned vocals often times taking over a track. His ability to harmonize gives us some of this tapes best moments.
The 13-track project gives listeners just the right amount of what each of these artists is capable of. There are also a few features with appearances from Free Ackrite, Westside Cash, Rabby Gambino & DatBoyToon. If you rock with classic West Coast sound, you're going to fuck with South of Pico from the moment you hear the first bass line. If you're looking for something to go crazy to, this probably isn't it. One thing is for sure though, West LA culture is in good hands with Mann, YeloHill & HitTown making music together.
